Conversation in our swimming class!
It’s unfortunate that I didn’t get a chance to learn swimming while I was a kid growing up in India. After coming here to the U.S.; where I ever I go for some entertainment that place has some thing to do with water, or water activities, either swimming, or boating ,kayaking ,canoeing or fishing. It is of great advantage if you know how to swim, other wise you miss the complete opportunity of enjoyment.
Any way, so I decided to take swimming lessons, and got my self enrolled. There are 6 lessons, once every week. I completed my 3rd lesson .Right now I am able to float on my back, float on my stomach. I can also kick my legs and with the help of hands movement I can move forward a little bit. So it’s a pretty nice achievement for me, who was not able to stand even for a minute over 3 feet of water.
As expected there were no Americans in my class. One guy from Columbia, one Chinese woman, and the other 3 women form India. In the beginning I was a little reluctant to join the class to escape the embarrassment from trying to learn swimming at this age. Since Americans are very good at all these extra curricular activities. This country is one of the top most countries in spending a huge amount on recreational activities. So by the age of 10 every one knows swimming, skating, skiing, and many other things. Unlike us who spend all their childhood just in studies and only studies.
Continuing my story, I took a sigh of relief when I saw all the students were of my age, some of them older than me. But at the same time to my annoyance the other two Indian women are more indulge in chit-chatting than learning swimming.
Their topic will be as follows:-
1st woman -> Hey, I can’t swim at all.
2nd woman -> Ya,me neither, I am not getting the hang of this water at all.
1st woman -> and you know, people say, it is easier for woman to learn swimming!,you
know because of body fat and all those things……. :):)
1st woman -> “Are yaaar”,ask na if we can come for practice some time.
2nd woman --> I am not sure lekin you can come on Friday and wed at after 9:00pm.
1st woman --> Na re baba “I take my kids to bed at that time I can’t come.
2nd woman -> I don’t want to ask the instructor, she is very mean, she is spending all her time only with her. I don’t like that. (Make some faces).
Then both of them will start talking about their Kids and household affairs.
(Both will chuckle for a while and make fun of the instructor quite sarcastically and keep floating in the rubber tubes.)
They never try to listen or focus on what the instructor explains. Their conversation is so annoying .Since the instructor can not understand their half English and half Hindi; she is completely ignorant about their conversation.
Some how I think every thing is for some good. We get extra attention from the instructor as she is left with a small number of serious learning students’ .So good for me. I avoid de-railing to that area of the pool, as their conversation is so interesting that it is hard to resist.

Haha, thats so true. Even I don't know swimming and can't learn at this age due to embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteSomeday when I get a private pool I will secretly learn it there. :)
:-) i like how you disparagingly put down their indulgence in conversation instead of swimming, and then say it is tempting to listen to, too. :) lol. good luck with the lessons! you can learn at any time. I just learnt after coming here and it took me many tries but I think I can swim now. :-)
ReplyDeletethe_girl from ipanema:- congratulation ,you can swim now.I can harldy swim ,but hopes are high!
