Child care in the United States !

Reports say that United States of America has the highest figures in obesity. It’s apparent that Americans don’t see it as a threat and as a result are not willing to change their life style at all. The outcome can be perilous; perhaps it has already reached to the point where people should start thinking about it seriously.

There are numerous reasons for it, for example eating habit, lack of exercise, living style etc are the major reasons. All the above reasons are justifiable .Nnnn --Don’t think I am digressing, just making my point.

Eating habit is random, and how can it not be, food here is so cheap and so tempting that it’s hard to resist. It’s a travesty that, there are countries where people are dying because of hunger and poverty and then it is the U.S.; where people are suffering because of the abundance of food.

For instance, consider the factor of life style. Kids learn what ever they see and experience since they are toddlers. I am amazed and want to laugh my heart out when I see a 2-3 year old kid getting dragged in the stroller. What is that?

Moms and Dads please let them walk on their two tiny feet, and let them experience how good it feels to walk, to get tired and not to get obese in future.

It’s one of the usual sites in the malls, to see grown up kids in the stroller. They will be given a cup of smoothie or some ice cream to suck upon, and then dragged every where.

No doubts, kids can get tired after walking for a long time, but that is O.K. if they can’t walk now when will they walk after all, after getting old? Because as soon as they will be 16 years old they wont get a chance to keep their feet on the ground, as some how all of them will have a car. It is not like us where transportation was always restricted to Autos, rickshaws and bus. Driving a car at the age of 16 was beyond imagination unless our parents are Tata-Birla.

Like wise, when we grow a little and make mistakes, we are handled differently. If you guys don’t remember our days as kids growing up in India, allow me take you all to the flash back. When it is time to study, no matter what, grudgingly or ungrudgingly you have to sit and study. There was no excuse. And if you digress from that routine, hey you are in a big trouble. And we knew that, that is why I never heard of the disease called Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) when I was in India. There is no kid in the world who likes to study by himself and will always make excuses not to study. This simple concept is justified by this ADD in the U.S. :) :)

In our country this is how it works:-

“Pappu padhai karo”,nahee padhega, lo ek Thappar Khaoo”

And that was the medicine, pappu will start studying. And pappu can't afford having OCD ever in his life.

On the streets,or any where I never see kids playing.Yes some times I see kids playing in the park but that is a rare site. Most of them indulge in video games. That time is not far when you will hear that teachers are hired to teach kids how to play video games in perfection. How to move thumbs and arms to score better.I am amazed.I just cant take this concept of upbringing kids.

I am not making fun of it, but some times our Indian system works well with these kinds of Kids. People hire nanny to keep them on track (you might have watched the T.V show SUPPER NANNY).

Have you also noticed any such kind of irritating parental care ?

Any way there are many more parental love sprees, which I guess are spoiling these kids rotten from a very early age. I don’t have any intention to offend any one and if by any chance I have done, I would apologize for that. But my suggestion is to let kids grow like a kid, not like robots. Because all these un-necessary cares are only exacerbating their anger, their unwillingness to do some thing, their indulgence in bad habits etc-etc.

  1. You are so true about the apathy in the US towards their health. Every time I see somebody eating those double macs along with a super sized slushy, I wince in pain!

The problem with corporal punishment in India is some people take it to extreme. Fortunately, my parents were moderate. I don't know if we should support physical form of punishment. But, in general I think in India, parents are more involved in child raising than here.

It funny you had a post on obesity the same day I wrote about my over-eating sweets. I promise I will stop eating like that and start exercising :)

  2. true! bindu said it right that "in India, parents are more involved in child raising than here". and I think this is how it should be. And then I think thats why we do care about our parents also. we dont throw them to old age people houses. Thats why our everyday is "father day" and "mother day".

  3. Parents in the US dwell under the impression, you let your kids go outside, they will be a victim of a violent crime. Ergo, the kid can't go outside if the parent isn't outside... But it's hot... It's time for such and such on tv... The kid learns to watch tv and complain about the weather.

We also have learned from the experts, who probably have no children of their own, time out/speaking/1-2-3 magic is the way to go... Right, I think this teaches the next generation there is no real consequences for their actions.

The last bit which paves the way for behavior problems; inconsistency, if a child can negotiate or nag his/her way, they will. Parents who give in half the time and punish half the time send mixed messages.

This is just my observations… I’m only the art teacher.

  4. It amazes me how spoilt these American kids are! I think obesity is just one manifestation of the decadent lifestyle they are having. The lethargy, not having proper parental role models, video games... all these are showing in various forms.

Nice post on a serious subject, by the way.

  5. Yeah, the food is cheap and so enticing. Burgers, fries and soda, oh my , who can resist ?

And may be they eat 'meat' too much with bacon in the breakfast t steak in the dinner.

  7. Time is changing in India too ... look in any metro, u will find 6-10 years ol kids who are overweight, expect rewards for everything, studies or otherwise....and then there is trend of pocket money ... gosh! todays' kids are rich ... i never carried a single penny till age of 16 when i left home for studies..

  8. The points u made are valid but all these things are slowly making their way into India too (atleast in a section of society).

  9. very good points.
recently i watched a documentary which argued that obesity is a disease caused by some micro-organisms and not necessarily due to gluttony...
india is just a few years behind the west. what happens in the west today would happen in india in a few years.

  10. masquer:- I know it is a bad example. But there is no shame in accepting the fact that this is how it works in India.Although I never had to go through that,it is a very common practice every where.
But the main point is not that or any example what message I want to convey is deriving different diseases based upon child natural behaviour is disconcerting for me.I don't believe there can be any disease as (ADD) Attention defecit Disoder.

  11. my opinions r mixed abt this issue - while i agree with u on the points of strollers n ADD, i still belive physical punishment is not the way to treat kids. many a times it works but with negative implications like developing a grudge for parents. of course a lovely hug n the words 'its all for ur good' after punishments works like magic.but it still shd be kept in limits n shdnt go far enough to seem like a terror.

  12. As many childhood problems as there are now verses my childhood, its astounding. We did have a few kids who needed to be put on something because they were too hyper. When they start hanging off the walls, they are too hyper.

Now though, we are finding a new disease everytime we turn around. There is ADD, ADHD, Panic attacks, autism, stress disorder... These kids haven't been in a war zone. They've been locked up. They haven't played with other kids on a regular basis. They have no social skill so they don't know how to share.

Part of the panic attacks and stress disorders stem from fast food. Eat it quick, in the car, quick before we get to soccor, ballet, tap, yoga, swimming, Thia Chi, basket weaving... I see this all the time.
