Our Fast food!

When I came to the U.S the first thing I missed was my mother and the second thing was the tasty, delicious and mouth watering food. I could not over come the emptiness of my mother’s presence and I guess will never be able to. I don’t even try to overcome because I know all my effort will be in vain. Her warmth, her friendliness and caring nature is so deep inside me that some times my heart just cries out “I need my mother”.

The second thing is food which I am trying my best to get as better as I can make it or have it. Some of the typical Indian Food items, specially those street foods keep roaming in my thoughts not only when I am awake but also in my dreams. When I wake up I find myself drooling on the pillow. And the misery is ,I never get to eat them even in my dreams. This is one sad story hha---!

I love Indian junk food items like Samosa,jalebee,pani-puree,rasgulla,gulabjamun, (mmmm----).It is not that I do not like American fast food or junk food items, I love them too, but some how I feel that American fast food can not be beat our Indian fast foods. It is heavenly. But sadly we Indians look down upon our culture and in some way our food too. In India these days American fast food chains have become very common, and people eat them with pride. Just because it is an American food and America is a rich country, we do not have to follow what ever they do. I guess not.

Thinking about all these, suddenly one day it came to my mind that how would the situation be if India was like America and people took pride in having our Indian fast foods and copying what we do. Hey! Guys now look, I am being facetious here and just comparing fast foods .Don’t insinuate some thing intellectual. Take it on a light note.

Yes so how would it look? When you go to a theater or a shopping mall or a football game or any theme park or any such place in the U.S. and:-

1) Instead of HOTDOG you are served SAMOSA. Hot sizzling samosa stuffed with potato masala, roasted peanuts, green chili complemented with sweet and sour tamarind chutney.Or Garam kachoree stuffed with ---(I don’t know what it is but very tasty)

2) Instead of PRETZEL you can eat PANI-PUREE, stuffed with Spicy mashed potato with Tamarind soup.

3) Instead of COKE or any SODA you can have BADAM MILK or LASSI or SHIKANJEE or Indian style tea with “malai mar ke”

4) Instead of ice cream and chocolate you are served with Cold RASGULLA, Slightly warm GULAB-JAMUN,or RASMALAI,KALAKAND,burfee, rabaree, chandrakala,Gajar ka Halwa,Badam ka halwa.Or warm jalebee with sugar syrup dripping form it

5) Instead of BURGAR you are served Bhel puree,or Pav-bhajee,chatt masala, tikki masala.

What can be better than above mentioned items? I suppose nothing.

I can go on and on but I shall stop now or my taste buds will burst with saliva. (I have a same kind of comparison list for lunch and dinner too)So this weekend I tried my hand on some of the things. To my surprise some of them came out really good and extremely tasty. If my description is not enough to tempt you people I am also posting the pictures of some of the items I made. We had a fabulous party this week and we loved it.

Here are the pictures:-

  1. Hey Doll,
Twice a year we have an India fest. The downtown area is blocked off, street dances to Indian music that has to be from the 80's because it's so close to Duran Duran it makes me laugh. I've had the pleasure of trying some of this. Not speaking the language or being very informed about Indian food, I walked by the vendors asking "What is it?" They would tell me if it was very hot or not so hot. I was doing pretty good. Then I met a woman I called Grandmother. She made me "eat". It was funny, she complained about the other vendor's. "His too fat, not good for you... Try this."

What I love about this time of the year is the fragrance in the air. Curry, saffron, turmeric and myriad of others I don’t know the names. There is such a wealth of smells. When you drive by a Burger King, you smell meat cooking or the hot French fry oil.
