The Time Machine.
I recently read a book by H.G Wells, "The Time Machine".
I started off reading the book with a little skepticism because I am usually not fascinated with such fictional events, but some where down the line I thought I will give it a try. Moreover that day I did not have any book to read, so I picked up this book and said, "ok why not".
The truth is, I read the classic Start version of the the book which is much easier to understand. I usually borrow these classical books in "classic Start" version because it is easier for my kids to understand and get interested in literature to later enjoy the original version of the book.
Anyway, I started reading the book and by the end of the day I realized I have already finished the book as it was so interesting. I was marveling at the idea of being able to traveling in time in future or in past.
After reading I had mixed feeling. Emotionally I was very scared at the thoughts described by the author when he went in future time. It was scary as what ever he described seemed so real which was not pleasant. I have already started seeing some of the experiences true in today's date and time and I don't like it. In real life, the seeds have already been sown to experience the kinds of events took place in future time in this book .
The author described that in future time he saw that human beings were much smaller compared to today's human beings. They were also very weak and fragile. There was a distinct diversification among the human race. The more flourishing kind lived a joyful life and enjoyed the pleasure of the life. The deprived one's lived underground who were the provider for the wealthy people who lived above ground. The underground people were the one's who grew and harvested fruits and vegetables, manufactured clothes, made furniture and other things necessary. Also the underground people looked and behaved very differently. They looked scary with sharp teeth, no eyelids, furry skin and liked to live in the dark.
My fear is that the way these days human beings are trying to get every thing done by drones, robots,
and machines, that the physical work is getting less and less every day. That is making people physically weaker. The self-driving cars is another invention in the same line of argument to me. There is so much diversification in the work area even now. People are so disconnected with each other, so isolated socially. They hardly have time to spend a minute for kids.
Both parents go to work, children go to after-care once they are done with school. By the time parents come back from work and pick them up, children are so exhausted that they do not have time and energy to talk to parents.
Our children are growing up seeing and feeling all these and this will keep passing on to generation after generation. The future described in the book did not look far-fetched to me. It felt so real and so unsettling.
I feel like I got the glimpse of the future after reading the book and I am not happy about it.
